Treatment of external wood with linseed oil and Stockholm tar: 2021 ~ 2022
Over-coating is best done either within days so the layers can fuse or after the last coat has dulled due to weathering. If the coating has dried for a week or two, and hardened, over-coating can be difficult. (See Sept 14th below)
2026
March 4~7th: Coated the south side. All beginning to look very dark after the last year. March 8th 2026
March 21st:
Now the ladder is removed from the north facing wall I could inspect and add a coat of oil. What is clear is that it hasn't been done for years as there is no weathering.
2025
Didn't do any. Did go very grey and dry
2024
Sept 16th Coating the east end with teak oil, linseed oil and a small amount of tung oil. Then added Stockholm tar to the second fill but had to dilute that with teak oil. IT seems the viscosity may well be a problem. Sept 14th 2024
Sept 15th It seems the west coating has dried to the touch. I wonder if that is a result of the underlying amount of tung oil or just the turpentine evaporating quickly. Sept 14th 2024
Sept 14th Went over the West end where the coating didn't really adhere well. Using 'teak oil' that's a 50/50 mix of linseed oil and turpentine there was no problem. So maybe it is the just the viscosity that was and has been a problem?
Sept 13th West end done but increasing problem with adhesion. Coating tends to withdraw to blobs??
May 8th, 9th & 10th Tarred the front face. On going
2023
Sept ~5th Tarred west gable side
Aug 15~16th Tarred rest of the south face
June 22nd Tarred the east part of the south face
May 31st Just Stockholm Tar
March 4th
Tried 'just' tar. I used a ladle of tar with a bit of old brush cleaning dregs. I only covered a small area facing west that gets a lot of weathering. Just Stockholm Tar
