Crop Vulnerability to TempUpdated: April 27th, 2017
Created: April 27th, 2017Ideally a max_min thermometer setup would help with accurate info but for now the general notes are:
5C
Runner and French Beans although started under glass and sometimes in the caravan with heat they are not put out until May when the temp is not expected to go below 5C
Pumpkins:
2C
Potatoes are the only crop that suffer invariably as they are outdoors 24Seven. The leaves seem to rupture from the cold at around 2 or 3 degrees C (temp from online weather sources ??) but as the tuber is underground recovery in the sense on new leaf growth is pretty much a certainty as those temps
0C
Strawberry flowers and maybe other blossom blackens
-2C
Peas, Radish, Lettuce, Brasiccas: All seem fine a degree or two below freezing.
-4C
Broad beans are by far the most hardy with a patch sown in November that survives the winter. The tops do sometimes fall over and look worse for wear but even at -4C they seem to recover quickly once the sun is out.
