Fig and Tree
July 8th, 2016I stole a twig from an overhanging tree in Calstock last spring. It took well and even produced a few small fig buds to my surprise. I had heard that stress can force a plant to procreate but from a cutting in first year? Anyway this year the four buds have grown to figs and I picked the one really ripe one. It has been soft with a slight red tint for some four or five days. I'd been away for a couple of days and it had not been eaten by slug, snail, mouse, avian, wasp or deer.

I have just pruned the pears and a bit more of the peach. Apparently this may be a bit late as growth has begun. Most of the larger cuts I treated with Stockholm tar but the whole job is a bit of a mess so will just have to see what summer options there are and get on the case next winter and early spring - before first week in March is over

Wire Netting: Crops
May 4th, 2017Something I have avoided for 20 years and moreover, actively removed all boundary fencing. Since then the deer population has soared and my green boundaries fail every now and then.
Last year I had a three-fold problem, the deer munched through hundreds of dwarf beans and many runners, whilst the pigeons just about annihilated the brassicas. Then later in the yearthe pheasant,I say the, as I saw only one, managed to finish off what kale survived and stunted what few broccoli and sprouts that survived.
So I have bought some wire fencing/netting to protect them.
