Roofing
September 17th, 2019Structure, Insulation and Shingles.
Structure 2" x 2" rafters with 2" x 1"battens of Siberian Larch, soaked in borax.
The rafters have 551mm centres (500mm + 1") to hold 500mm wide insulation. The insulation does not extend over the gables so there are extra rafters at the gable ends. This equates to 15 rafters per side.

Fri 8th Nov: Tuai brought the rafters, battens, roofing hooks, ladder and the cork.
Sat 9th Nov: Too wet to do any work on the roof.
Sun 10th Nov: Refitted the roofing hooks to the ladder. The problem being the hooks are meant for wide aluminium rungs and the wooden are so thin the clamps don't fit well and dig into the wooden rungs and bring the wheels meet the legs.
I cut an aluminium scaffolding pipe to 30mm then cut it down the lenght to fit around the rung and binding steel strop. I then added a 15mm wooden slat to the other side of the rung to take up sme width. All seems fine.
Managed to get 7 rafters on the north facing side. I had intended to do both sides in tandem, but the mould eating into the non-durable roof-boards meant I spent a while scrubbing them down. Luckily I found some copper sulfate from some 25 years ago and mixed that with borax. I scrubed the roof boards with this solution/suspension.
