Spoke to Candace, one of the neighbours. The following is the gist of the conversation and the substance of a letter I intend to deliver.

Dear Candace

RE Damage to trees on ELF Property

As I said in our conversation this day, I am not interested in who new what and require no recompense nor apologies for the damage.

As the manager of the ELF trust I would like to be assured that in the event that you employ someone, for payment or otherwise, to work on trees or any other part of your property, you will ensure that such person or persons do not enter on to trust property or dispose of any matter on ELF trust property.

I am prepared to allow workmen and the like to lean over to cut vegetation that may be growing out of your boundary wall and to allow such vegetation, along with other clean vegetable biomass to be disposed of where it falls . Should someone want to use the land to access awkwardly growing trunks then all efforts are to be made to contact me to request access. However where it is deemed urgent and I am unavailable I hereby grant Candace the privilege to oversee such work on the basis that continuous efforts will be made to keep me informed.

None of the above should be taken as any grant to cut trees or damage any vegetation growing on the trust property. Should damage to trees occur again during any use of the land for access you will be charged a fee of £1000.

On Broad Beans

Blackfly (Aphis fabae): I am used to removing the tops, and sometimes larger pieces of broad bean stems to curtail the infestation of Blackfly. This year has not only produced a larger infestation but the black fly have spread to a handful of runner bean plants.

I have noticed elderflower branches and flower fronds covered in Blackfly: must have been hundreds of thousands if not millions, but not here on the land.

The Cabbage Whitefly (Alyrodes brassicae) There have been regular infestations after the first few years of cultivation.

Actions: My usual task is to pinch out or cut infected parts and put them in a bucket and then tub which has water, pee and wood ash. The liquid is then conveniently draw off and used to feed the crops.

As Aphids use a secondary host plant in their breeding cycles it may be useful to discover and eliminate or reduce there number where they exist within a hundred yards of the crop area.

I have also noted some collections of dark, but shiny insects on Red Campion but more like beetles ????

4th September Just checked the work that ProArb had done on behalf of WPD. I'm disturbed to find that a 15 year old apple tree has been felled.

I called WPD engineering on 01752 502079 and have been called by Steve Cross who is going to call ProArb with a view of checking over their work. If I clear under and around the line I will not get paid and 'ProArb' will still check it out in five years.

20th June Received a copy of the wayleave agreement showing two poles but one of them is the nearer Harewood House and is not the one adjacent western boundary of the triangle field, so it looks like I have been receiving payment for a pole that isn't on ELF land, which I intend to resolve, when convenient.

I receive payment each year from Western Power Distribution for their use of the land to support infrastructure to transport Electricity to Trekensa gardens. This year it is £22.42 for 2 poles, 2 stays and 6m lengths(25m) of underground earth cable

Although the trust does not use money and therefore does not keep annual accounts I personally keep the money which does go to managing the land albeit pretty insignificant.

However the purpose of this post is to note that I have finally called Western Power D to enquire about the position of the items installed. I am pretty sure of the two poles and stays but no idea of the earth cable.

I called WPD this morning, 01208 892199 to enquire about the positioning and was told I will be sent a paper copy of the information.
