Cholesterol & Bile
High Blood Cholesteol Level
With a high blood level the implications are;
1. either there is a poor re-absorption rate or
2. or there is over production and the normal absorption, although working well, cannot cope with the increased content.
In either case the high level
a) is unlikely to come form food, especially in the case of plant foods,
b) may cause diarrhoea. For this a sequester may be taken orally to absorb the excess bile salts
Queries:
- if there is mal-absorption is the high level a result of high synthesis?
- Look into gall bladder storage!
In response to low blood cholesterol, different cells of the body, mainly in the liver and intestines, start to synthesize cholesterol from acetyl-CoA by the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase. This is then released into the blood.
