Cow's milk casein, a hidden allergen in natural rubber latex gloves. Ylitalo L, Mäkinen-Kiljunen S, Turjanmaa K, Palosuo T, Reunala T.
Source: Department of Dermatology, Tampere University Hospital, Tampere, Finland.

BACKGROUND:
We have previously noted that one natural rubber latex (NRL) glove brand used for skin prick testing in the diagnosis of NRL allergy contained cow's milk casein.

OBJECTIVE:
We sought to examine whether other commonly marketed NRL glove brands contain cow's milk casein.

METHODS:
The casein content of 30 NRL glove extracts (1:5 wt/vol) was measured by ....

RESULTS:
The casein content of the glove used in NRL allergy screening (Triflex, Baxter) was rather high (ie, about 400 microgram/g of glove). .... detected distinct amounts of casein in 8, minimal amounts in 7, and no casein in the remaining 15 NRL glove brands.

CONCLUSIONS:
Several brands of NRL gloves were found to contain casein, ..... The use of casein as a stabilizer in glove manufacture without appropriate labeling should be stopped because it can also cause contact urticaria syndrome in individuals with cow's milk allergy.

Below are some extracts from the national Institute of Health (USA), Please use the link to see the full text and foot-notes. https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/cc/zinc.html

Zinc is an essential mineral that is naturally present in some foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. Zinc is also found in many cold lozenges and some over-the-counter drugs sold as cold remedies.

. . . A daily intake of zinc is required to maintain a steady state because the body has no specialized zinc storage system [10].

14:41 Permalink Yeast Extract

Categories: Product Info

The best yeast extract is undoubtedly the Essential own brand Organic, they also produce a non organic version I imagine as it is cheaper; I see no other retail reason. Essentials yeast extract is especially made from a unique production that is designed only to produce the extract.

With B12 Meridian yeast extract contains 3.5µg per 5g.

Meridian's main product is 12.6% salt. It says 5% Sodium on the label. Their other product has no added salt resulting in a content of 0.8% salt. The main advantage of meridian's products over Essential is that they have B12, something those who have poor absorption rates or reduced intake of B12 welcome.

Folic AcidB1B2B3B6
Wi Salt.3713.42.5771.7
No Salt.6592.73552.9

If the base yeast extract was the same product, given the removal of 12.6% salt I would expect the [No Salt ]version's nutritional data to increase by 14.4%, clearly this is not the case.

Categories: Manufacturers, Product Info

This is the rare thing I don't buy from Essential and so is a separate order. I buy from Source Foods company in Cwm, Wales.

Paul has been making miso for decades and has a variety that is all British in that the beans are field beans from Kent and the barley from Scotland.

The more common styles are sweet and mellow rice ans soya, each having a low salt version which uses predominantly potassium chloride than sodium.

You can purchase on-line, but unless you order over £30 you must also pay for postage. I buy bulk a couple of times a year so you can contact me any time.

Sentient

Having a faculty, or faculties, of sensation and perception. Specif. (Physiol.), especially sensitive; as, the sentient extremities of nerves, which terminate in the various organs or tissues. One who has the faculty of perception; a sentient being.

Sentient Quotations

"The main point for me is moral; animals are sentient beings. I know for some this is a hard argument to accept, but we''re not built to eat a lot of meat."Grace Slick

"Music is intended and designed for sentient beings that have hopes and purposes and emotions.."Jacques Barzun

"There is but one honest limit to the rights of a sentient being; it is where they touch the rights of another sentient being.."Frances Wright

"The crucial task of old age is balance: keeping just well enough, just brave enough, just gay and interested and starkly honest enough to remain a sentient human being.."Florida Scott-Maxwell

Wikipedia

Sentience

is the ability to feel or perceive. The term is used in science and philosophy, and in the study of artificial intelligence. Sentience is used in the study of consciousness to describe the ability to have sensations or experiences, known to Western philosophers as "qualia". In eastern philosophy, sentience is a metaphysical quality of all things that requires respect and care. In many science fiction works sentience is often used as a synonym for sapience meaning "human-level or higher intelligence".

Philosophy and sentience

In the philosophy of consciousness, "sentience" can refer to the ability of any entity to have subjective perceptual experiences, or "qualia".[1] This is distinct from other aspects of the mind and consciousness, such as creativity, intelligence, sapience, self-awareness, and intentionality (the ability to have thoughts that mean something or are "about" something). Sentience is a minimalistic way of defining "consciousness", which is otherwise commonly used to collectively describe sentience plus other characteristics of the mind.

Some philosophers, notably Colin McGinn, believe that sentience will never be understood, a position known as "New Mysterianism". They do not deny that most other aspects of consciousness are subject to scientific investigation but they argue that subjective experiences will never be explained; i.e., sentience is the only aspect of consciousness that can''t be explained. Other philosophers (such as Daniel Dennett) disagree, arguing that all aspects of consciousness will eventually yield to scientific investigation.

21:36 Permalink Why Vegan

Categories: Sentiment

Vegan usually denotes either someone who doesn't eat, or food that doesn't contain, any animal products. Vegans who have an ethical rather than health reason also minimise the use of all animals and their by-products

Avoiding the obvious use of fur, skin and wool for clothing isn't too difficult, but it is harder to avoid it in products that are manufactured from many ingredients.

  • Many wines for instance are finned using animal products and although most of it is removed it has blatantly exploited animals in its making
  • Most 'diary free' chocolates are made on the same machine as the milk versions are almost definitely contaminated - so much so that Green and Blacks now label their dark chocolates as containing milk due to permanent contamination following audits, although there is no intentional milk added as an ingredient.
  • Ethically exploitation of animals ranges from use as pets, working animals, and those ued for exerimentation.

It is impossible to avoid consuming or using products that have, in their design or manufacture, used animals. As a consumer, and using money to employ others to do that which I can't or won't do myself, means I am not able to be avoid responsibility for the continuing painful exploitation of many animals, not forgetting humans.

If intent was all that mattered then that would help, But good intentions or lack of attention is not very comforting when I know that animals have been used in the processing of any consumer product.
Or to flag the point: Generally consumer products are ethically un-vegan as all products have at some point in their development been made by or with the use of unwilling and captive animals.

Free animals are not a problem. Birds and slugs that play in the garden and fields are ok.

Personally I am vegan for what may best be describes as a spiritual reason. Not that I give any credence to the 'Spirit' and all that jazz, but it happened like this.

Way back in April 1974 I was hanging around the Palace of Peace in Dulwich, the haunt of the Premies of Jai Guru Maharaj Ji, a young 13 years old Indian Hindu. Maharaji offered the Knowledge - being face to face with God. Although it all seemed a bit of scam most of the hippies were very intent on bettering themselves to be able to face God. This bettering was not a material gain but a desire to be eternally concious of freedom and bliss. The Knowledge was the way to achieve this. Yet the notion arose in conversation that why would anyone expect to acquire such bliss when they abused animals by eating them etc. Well some year later I decided that stealing animal milk and wool was not the kind of thing God would do. So one day someone called me a vegan.

Basically being vegan is a thoughtful process that keeps me aware of how much of a consumer I am. Its my mantra from the 60's. There can be not freedom whilst I enslave others. 'Neither a slave nor master be'. I am chained to my indulgences and free myself as and when I can.

So being vegan is just a meditative way of consuming less. I care about my conciousness and want to limit the harm I do by consuming less. I am not a Hindu ascetic or a Franciscan monk, I am an Acid vegan and more than happy with the Knowledge that life is eternal and that 'from death comes only death'.

What is generally called living is in fact killing, and no enlightened soul could mistake living for life.

14:26 Permalink Bio-D

Categories: Manufacturers

Unlike Ecover, Bio-D do not test on any creatures, no matter how small.
They told me they are a smaller company, UK based and are not big exporters and as such, they are not required to have such testing. They also use a set 5 years cut off,

Five Year Rolling Rule vs. Fixed Cut off Date
There are currently two options for a manufacturer wishing either to purchase raw materials or to produce new products/ingredients which can state the claim ‘not tested on animals’: the Fixed Cut Off Date policy or the Five Year Rolling Rule policy. Manufacturers who implement the fixed cut off date will not purchase or use raw materials that have been tested on animals after the specified date, chosen by the manufacturer. This means that no new chemicals brought to the market after this date can be used by the manufacturer, since testing to prove safety is required by law, and animal testing is generally the only accepted method. Therefore this would mean an ingredient could not be used even if it alleges some environmental benefit.

Hi! you cannot order online.

If you would like to order wholefoods and live in or near Calstock please contact me and provide your local telephone number and I will call you.

Update:
Here is a list of products previously bought.

The prices will no doubt have increased, but they are a guideline as to what products I collate.
For example: Recently 5kg of figs were bought at £34 when at the last purchase, some years ago, they were £11

When I can get my head around converting or transferring my suppliers database the products will, in stages, be a) listed, b) priced and c) available online. :) ~ ~ That's when vegan pigs can fly or sooner.

Thank you:- Roger Lovejoy
