Some notable events: April 2015 There has been very little rain this month and not that much this year. April 15th: Hottest day, 26°C, since last summer. April 16th: For the first time the ash are leafing at the same time as the sycamore. Ash is usually a few weeks later at least (last to leaf, first to shed). It seems all the trees are leafing at the same time, which is extremely odd (ash, oak, hawthorn, sycamore). So it seems they are primarily sensitive to temperature not day length.
Apart from the idea that a 'proper' mattress may ease my nights the idea that I can get a hand made vegan option was attractive.
Made by John Ryan |Vegan Mattress. | Made to order in Manchester so takes some weeks and is then delivered.
There are #?#'vanadium'pocketed springs between multiple layers of fibres,
(bamboo, cotton,)Talalay latex( organic flax and coir).
The layers are duplicated each side of the springs so the mattress can be turned over.
Vegan mattress layers
Size: I chose the 3ft rather than the 4ft for weight and size of sheets etc. though wider may be a better 'bed'.
The Base
It seems John Ryan require a base to allow breathing, so I am making a base with a 23mm gap below, some 43mm overall height in such a way that air can flow to and from the window location.
Width of mattress at 3ft is 914.4mm. Making slatted base of two panels. Width of 3ft 2in (968mm) x (965mm) ≈ square and base of giving 965mm x 1930mm (3ft 2" x 6ft 4")
Each panel has three 968mm wide 50mm x 50mm beams.
Width of each slat is 68mm then a space of 32mm gives a total of 100mm x 9 with another 68 = 968mm. Giving a 28mm overhang each side.
April 30th Cut 10 slats to 3ft 2in (965mm)
April 30th Cut 4 beams to 968mm and started cutting into one beam to lay slats. . . .
May 1st First beam completed second finished. . . .Slots cut in base beam
May 2nd First 38in square of bed frame finished, but no borax or oil added.Mattress Base: Part 1
May 3rd Made an error, working whilst a bit tired etc. and not paying sufficient attention. I cut out one of the spacers for the slates. This however has brought to my attention the idea of locking them together.
May 4thUsed the error. Cut a spacer from the other 'square' and made a key to lock them together. Have also brushed them with borax solution. Mattress Frame: Parts Locked
Have oiled over with linseed and turpentine.
May 9th Base is dry and distortions minimal.
. . . Clear mezzanine of futon and bedding and check carpets for under and over base. ✅
. . . Make mattress cover
May 15th. . . Major work on clearing track of overhanging branches. Cut hand and head. Used Makita to clear verges and turning area. Also removing large ash logs to better enable entrance and exit form △
May 20th Base ready. Carpet under and over.Mattress Base with coverMattress Base air gap
