Sewing Shirt #1Updated: August 19th, 2026
Created: December 31st, 2024Sleeves
4th Jan: Only managed to cut a piece of paper to make an arm pattern and then only half of one. However it does appear as though I have enough material from the 2m x 1m cloth. (Update 11th Jan: Oops! Not so ~ read on)
Measure arm holes circumference and match arm shoulder end to same length
5th Jan: I think the pattern is wide enough. some 45" to play with.
Decided to 'make' the button panels. I was going to use some dark crimson ramie, but after washing it was clearly a bit rougher than I wanted and was a bit of an ordeal fixing it so . .
On the side of the buttons I just folded to three layers and on the buttonhole side I added a bit of heavy cotton between the three folds. I may add stitching to the 'hole' panel to a) firm it a bit and b) maybe add some colour.

10th Jan: Having made the collar and cuffs I cut the cloth for a sleeve, and made the arm edge slightly smaller so I could use specific piece of cloth, so hope that works. I did check and pin and it's not 'too' bad but I also cut a bit off the edge of the back to shorten the matching 'seem' to be.
11th Jan: Managed to sew the sleeve arm edge to the 'body'

Just tried to wear with pinned sleeves. Oops! It just fits but is tight so will add a strip before sewing the seem.
Will an inch be enough
12th Jan: Sadly although I have added width it's still a bit tight, so OK for a summer shirt with no other arm coverings, i.e. a vest will be fine but not a long sleeve T-shirt. Probably only ended up 1" wider as the seems, now I think about are 2 seems with 2 overlaps each over 1/4 inch, so I lost 1" from 2" strip. ✘

Currently I am sewing the seem so will get a real feel for it later. Then I'll make a new 'pattern' for the left sleeve and hopefully get that attached.
13th Jan: Added the widening strip but still fiddling with the extra width under the arm pit area. It's a bit messy but hopefully will feel OK and not be visibly apparent unless I lift my arm :)
