14:57 Permalink Meridian Light Tahini 454g

Categories: Not So!

I have just sent an email to Meridian and Essential about the quality of the last batch.

Subject: Meridian Light Tahini 454 tub
Date: Tue, 18 Feb 2020 14:48:13 +0000
From: roger
To: consumer.care@3vnaturalfoods.com

Hi

Just spoke to someone on the phone.

I bought a tray of the above on 3rd February 2020 from Essential Trading, Bristol to whom a copy of this email will be sent.

I only opened one on 15th Feb and the tahini is dark, more like peanut butter and tastes burnt. It also seems a finer grind.

I can't easily return it to Essential as I only order bi-monthly. Here are a couple of images with batch no. etc.

The image [tahini.jpg] shows the recent product on the left, the one on the right is an earlier batch and is fine.

All the best

Categories: Product Info

Just bought a box from Essential and discovered to my dismay that it is very dark, not at all as previous batches. Have sent following message via ichoc.de/en/contact/

Just bought a box of the Classic Helle Rice and it is very dark and very disappointing.
I could complain to my supplier Essential of Bristol, but they would not be able to resolve the problem.

Batch No. 12.2020 L29264 b

Apart from the organic malt extract I've been using for some 32years + I have just recently tried their organic hemp oil only to find it is ridiculously pleasant. It doesn't have an overpowering taste like some debilitated marijuana. 250ml for less than £6.

Poorly labelled to highlight it's Ω6 rather than the Ω3. Have called to say no-one wants to know about Ω6 and I am expecting an email to tell me the source.

09:57 Permalink Tree of Life Choc Bars

Categories: Manufacturers, Product Info, Not So!

Email to info@treeoflife.co.uk

Hi

Visiting a local 'Wholefood shop' I noticed two of your products on the table ~ they have a little display. I'm not sure if it's for new products or stuff they are about to get rid of.

However if I visit the shop I buy various exotic things to keep the shop alive, given I've visited it in Tavistock for some 45 years.

The products of yours I bought are the Chai Spice and the Coconut 70 choc bars.

Here's a general gripe. Although I applaud your efforts in encouraging the 'Fairtrade' side of commerce I don't support the view that the chocolate ~ as raw, is anything special nor do I think using coconut blossom as a sweetener is anything but a gimmick. In terms of body and mind health both are a joke and in terms of environmental care and astuteness they are insulting.

Ok! so that's the good stuff, which applies to all commerce, now to your offerings.

"we hand-decorate our bars with delicious toppings"

a) the so called decoration on the coconut was dried coconut on the bottom, hmm!

b i) there was no 'topping' or bottoming on the Chai Spice

b ii) The chai spice is like going to the dentist, there is so much clove, it went on the compost heap, with the wrapper you commend.

All in all a very unpleasant experience.

I won't post this on twitter, as you would so 'love to hear' as I don't use social media and put insidious further demands on earth's resources. On the face of it you present yourselves as some caring sort of business.

I operate a small wholefood distribution in Cornwall, have been vegan for 45 years, grow most of my food, drink rain water and burn wood for cooking and heating.

I have no desire to save the planet or anything hereon. I am concerned, as no doubt you are, about the arguments that flow from the ever increasing consumption by so called homo sapiens. It is a matter of will to ease off all consumption and make space to develop an awareness of the soul, something that is not to bought, sold, promoted or discussed.

If you would answer this email, a blank page of acknowledgement would be appreciated as I would rather not have to respond to your responses, and will definitely be avoiding the aforementioned chocolate bars. Yuk!

An updated, edited version of this is available at https://calstock.org.uk/vow.php/product_inf/tree-of-life

Oh! and I hope you have seen the '10 sephiroth' version of the Tree of Life with the three veils of the negative space wherein all forms of distraction and persuasion dwell.

Pusser's rum

Woods Navy Rum

Royal Navy Rum

The rum ration, or "tot", from 1850 to 1970 consisted of one-eighth of an imperial pint (71 ml) of rum at 95.5 proof (54.6% ABV), given out to every lower deck sailor from the age of 20 onwards at midday. Senior ratings (petty officers and above) received their rum neat, whilst for junior ratings it was diluted with two parts of water to make three-eighths of an imperial pint (213 ml) called grog.

The rum ration was served from one particular barrel, also known as the "Rum Tub", which was ornately decorated and was made of oak and reinforced with brass bands with brass letters saying "The Queen, God Bless Her".

Tot glasses were kept separate from any other glasses. They were washed on the outside, but never inside, in the belief that residue of past tots would stick to the side of the glass and make the tot even stronger.

For Comparison
1 RN tot is 54.6 x 71ml = 38.766 ml (39)
3 x 25ml Woods @ 57% = 42.75ml (43)
3 x 25mlPussers @ 54% = 40.5ml (41)
4 x 25ml of 37.5 = 37.5 ml (38) (Papagyo FairTrade)
4 x 25ml of 40 = 40 ml

Royal Navy Grog 231ml @ 18.2% equivalent to 4 x 50ml glasses of port
4 x 50ml of Port @ 20% = 40ml

16:24 Permalink Oils and Omega 3

Categories: Nutrients

Lipids > Triglycerides > Edible Oils > Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's)

There are two families of EFA's, that have to be consumed, as they cannot be made by the human body; they are classified as 'Omega 6' and 'Omega 3' fatty acids.

Fatty acids that are required by the human body but cannot be made in sufficient quantity from other substrates, and therefore must be obtained from food, are called essential fatty acids. There are two series of essential fatty acids: one has a double bond three carbon atoms removed from the methyl end; the other has a double bond six carbon atoms removed from the methyl end. Humans lack the ability to introduce double bonds in fatty acids beyond carbons 9 and 10, as counted from the carboxylic acid side.[7] Two essential fatty acids are linoleic acid (LA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). They are widely distributed in plant oils. The human body has a limited ability to convert ALA into the longer-chain n-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which can also be obtained from fish.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatty_acid#Essential_fatty_acids

Before the advent of the development of agriculture the proportion of these has been estimated as 3 to 2, whereas today's diet the proportion is more akin to 10:1 and is associated with "increased cancer, heart disease, allergies, diabetes and other afflictions"

An increase in the diet of Omega 3 oils is the obvious change to make, with a corresponding decrease in other oils where oil is already a large part of the diet. The daily recommended consumptions of Ω6 and Ω3 are 3-4 and 2-2 grammes per day, one teaspoon-full.

  1. Using 8ml (7g) of hemp oil would provide them at 5:2
  2. A use of Perilla Oil, or Linseed Oil as an additive could be preferable.with ratios of 1:4. So a mix of Olive Oil and Perilla Oil or Linseed oil in the ratio of 4:1 would provide a Ω6/Ω3 ratio of nearly 3:2

The lack of availability of Perilla oil means that Linseed oil is more likely to be used. An alternative would be to grow the Perilla plant for food.

The problem of converting LA (Ω6) to AA and ALA(Ω3) to DHA. is exacerbated by a high intake of Ω6. It is not enough to increase the Ω3 intake and reduce that of Ω6 but to reduce the overall intake of polyunsaturates, not an easy thing as sunflower oil, which is very high in Ω6 is in many margarines, cakes and crisps etc., to help the body be more keen to use the Ω3.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essential_fatty_acid

Humans can convert both LA (Ω6 docosapentaenoic acid (22:5n-6)) to AA and ALA (Ω3 docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3)) to DHA. This is clearly illustrated by studies in vegans and vegetarians[6] If there is relatively more LA than ALA in the diet it favors the formation of docosapentaenoic acid (22:5n-6) from LA rather than docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3) from ALA. This effect can be altered by changing the relative ratio of LA:ALA but is more effective when total intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids is low. However, the capacity to convert LA to AA and ALA to DHA in the preterm infant is limited, and preformed AA and DHA may be required to meet the needs of the developing brain. Both AA and DHA are present in breastmilk and contribute along with the parent fatty acids LA and ALA to meeting the requirements of the newborn infant. Many infant formulas have AA and DHA added to them to be equivalent to human milk.

https://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/77/1/226.full

Lactating women who supplemented their diet with flaxseed oil showed increases in blood and breastmilk concentration of alpha-linolenic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid but no changes to concentrations of docosahexaenoic acid.[13]
