Invasive Plants

2002 to 30th July, 2009

Of the many plants deemed invasive, ELF trust has a contract with Natural England(2007), previously English Nature to remove the following two.

To maintain the 'organic' nature of the land, they are being removed manually to avoid the use of Glyphosate weedkiller

Giant Hogweed

Mostly growing along the river bank and within the willow carr, in the eastern part of the reedbed. The plants are dug out and composted. Reduction over the years is evident.

Japanese Knotweed

Three sites were found in 2002, all along the river bank.

Himalyan Balsam:- Rapidly expanding. Need to contact English nature and Environment Agency to co-ordinate removal along the whole of the River Tamar. Cover most of the SSSI and drain-ways of adjacent floodplains.

Ragwort:- Effective control has been established by pulling by hand yearly. Vera helps by doing the top fields.
