Have I really reached the bottom of the the pit? Can I stop digging?
No not quite yet!
During the later part of Friday when I thought all was done and dusted I looked at the parts again, never sure I have the full story.
So the last few pieces needed to fit the shredder blade are used to fit all the blades so are a common cost, not so.
The rider plate isn't used on the shredder blade, that's what the 'guide ring is for'.
Now this raises an ugly serpent. So looking into the depths of Stihl's information I see that when using a circular saw blade a different guide ring is used.
I think I resolved some of this late Friday. I had downloaded the manual for the FS460 which has yet more information to chew over. It states that the guard ring has to be replaced to use the circular saw. More confusing is that I discover they mean something completely different when using the term 'guard ring' when applied to the circular saw than when applied to the shredder blade.
When applied to the shredder blade the 'guard ring' is a modified 'rider plate'
When applied to the circular saw it refers to the guide ring that is attached to the gearbox and is used in all other attachments.
Reluctantly I called Stihl technical services again and they confirmed that was the case and gave me the number. Which I will insert later after extracting it from an emaiI sent to head of customer services, Shelly Curtis.
Anyway suffice it to say Radmore and Tucker have never heard of such a thing. The manual instructs to remove the thrust plate to replace the guide ring. Radmore & Tucker say the thrust plate is never removed.
I give them the number from Stihl and they can't find any record of it. It would appear that they sell the saw blade which is then mounted improperly as not only does it require a different 'Guide Ring' but also a different 'Rider Plate' as when using the shredder blade, although it is then called a 'Guide Ring'
Ok this is getting silly and now what is that I read.
The next page is an extract of an email I sent to Shelly Curtis at 14.49 on Friday 10th. For the full email see the first comment to this post.
