Broad BeansUpdated: November 1st, 2022
Created: November 1st, 2022There's an Autumn sewing to enable an early crop that often results in flowers in February. The seeds are soaked overnight and encouraged to start sprouting before I sew them. a 2" depth is about average, deeper and they take a while to coem through, shallower and the mice will smell them and dig them up 3" may be better. However I tend to cover them with a fine galvanised mesh or glass until they start to break the surface and then cover each with a glass jar to further protect from pheasants and mice. The jars can alos protect against any frost on the young shoots. Usually I plant 3 rows of around 33 beans over 6" apart, maybe 7 or 8 inches.
