Himalayan Balsam 2010Updated: June 24th, 2010
Created: June 24th, 2010August:
- 1st: Found a few dozen in the field adjacent the north edge of Site 4-hence the small curvy bit.
- 2nd: Finished first sweep of Site 5. Although it takes 3 to 4 hours of cracking through the reeds I came back with only two bags of weed ~ a great improvement on the dozens last year. Still early days yet
- 4th: Final sweep of copse (Site 2)
- 6th: Back to Site 1. Cleared southern half of the top level. Note some ragwort needs removing too.
- 7th: Back at Site 1. Cleared northern half of the top level and most top 'half' of northern slope. Had the help of Ze.
- 8th: Went over area cleared with Ze again, due to his lack of experience. Slashed a small area across the drainage ditch from the bridge (track) southwards. Also cleared some of the slope south of the track joining the upper fields to the fen meadow.
- 9th: Continued with the slope south of the track. There's a dense area in amongst the fallen pine tree that will have to done as soon as possible as some flower heads popped. On the image below that is the green 'tree' in the south-east corner of area F, which is now not green as it has died. Also went over the slope further south and cleared stragglers etc.
- 12th: Cleared area around fallen pine. Went over all slope and upper field. Cleared up to 6 metres depth across the drainage channel north and south of the bridge, some 10 metres each way. Just a starter to see waht difference it makes next year. Also cleared a small buffer along the northern edge of the other fen meadow, south of that defined on the photographic map.
- 16th: Went over sites {3,4,5 and 6} again, with the help of Tuai. Taui also cleared the riverside from site 6 down to the copse (site 2)
- 30th: Cleared all of top of Site 1. That's A & B on the detailed map of Site 1
- 31st: Gathered up stragglers on top of Site 1 and cleared parts E,F and D on the slope of Site 1
